To the rookie

Hope you had a good flight back from Sweden .

Today I ran and finished the Santa Clarita Marathon in 5:39:56.  It was my fourth marathon in 15 days, all with finish times under 5:51.

At the start and early in the race I saw a bunch of LA Leggers.  Also saw a few 50 State Marathon club members, and few Marathon Maniacs. Talked with Albert Shum Dan Mosell, as well as Bob Gold and Rex May from my 2004 LA Vintage Leggers team.  Bob and Rex were running the half marathon.  In the 70-74 age group range, Bob took 2nd and Rex 4th.

I knew the day was going to be warm so I slowed the pace from Silicon Valley the week before.  Also had a residual hamstring pull from SV, so used that as excuse to slow later in the race as it started to really warm.  Remembered Tom Adair’s saying how he had walked a couple of marathons last month, so basically walked in the last 4 miles and still beat my time from Mystic Country by 10 minutes.

In the last half the temperature climbed and the Santana Winds came up.   Hope my friends running in NYC, Boise , ID , and Georgia (where the early morning temp was 32F) did not have strong winds like I had.   Dana finished a few minutes behind me.

I checked and I came in 5th in my age group.   Since did not have to stick around to get the award, I drove home.  In the evening I went out for steak dinner with Carol and our friends Steve and Donna who were at my 50 States Finishing celebration.

This was my 75th marathon and 10th California marathon.
